Me, Myself, & A Bowl of Bò Kho
July 12, 2009
Living here in Iowa forces me to learn how to cook for myself. For example, take one of my favorite dishes, bò kho:

With Golden Deli and Saigon Flavor nowhere in sight, I made my $10 crockpot work for me to make me many bowls of bò kho to last me the whole week. I skipped out on using lemongrass since I’m not sure if I can find any around here. I also used beef in lieu of oxtail.
The results were wonderful: tender beef pieces swimming with bean sprouts and cilantro in a complex spice filled tomato soup base. Although I am glad I learned a new recipe, I sure miss the days when I can just conveniently drive to a local restaurant to get a delicious bowl of bò kho.

I’m glad you liked the recipe. Learning to cook will serve you much farther anyway.
Although, not sure where you are in Iowa but there must be some VNese restaurants around. I remember when I lived in Chicago, the VNese all over the Midwest would stock up like crazy at the grocery stores when they came into town.

Doh! Hehe. Your blog title says you’re in Iowa City.
Either way, I’ve only driven through Iowa so I have no idea what the culinary scene is like there.

Not a problem! The only decent Vietnamese place I know got flooded out in last year, but I rather make it myself anyway since I feel that the Asian food here doesn’t really compare to back in L.A. And you’re right – cooking is good for me! Good thing I don’t have to go all the way out to Chicago to stock up on Asian food ingredients though since there are a couple here that can provide me with all I need. Thanks for the comment!
BTW, this sounds silly, but I feel honored that you commented on my blog. I’m quite a fan.
